Every Time I Fall In love It’s Summer

RICHARD TAITTINGER GALLERY is thrilled to present Every Time I Fall In Love It’s Summer, the second solo New York exhibition by TIMOTHY GOODMAN (b. 1982). Following the success of his NYC 2021 show. This exhibition focuses on Goodman’s emotional affinity for summertime that includes childhood nostalgia, past heartbreaks, and New York City as a grounds for healing. Timothy communicates these concepts through text based graphic art accented with figures and bold compositions that bring the viewer into Timothy’s own fantastical New York City as well as into his own lived experiences as a hopeless romantic. We asked Timothy to share his insights and thoughts on his second solo exhibition at Richard Taittinger Gallery:

“Every time I fall in love it’s summer. And every summer I fall in love with roller coasters, fire hydrants, and 90s hip hop with the windows down. I fall in love with tattoo sleeves, the NBA Finals, and MTV. I fall in love with the memory of my grandmother sharing her childhood memories with me. I fall in love with Paris, New York City and cutoff jeans. I fall in love with love, with the joy and the regrets, with the heartbreaks and the time spent together that I’d never take back. I fall in love with creating art on the streets, I can see the faces of the people that walk past me in the hot summer heat.”

I’ve been privileged to contribute to the landscape of NYC and to many communities with my artwork throughout the years. I don’t take that for granted. So whether I’m drawing on a basketball court for kids in Brooklyn, spray painting a sanitation truck for the city of NYC, creating a mural about the history of Jazz in New Orleans, launching a global collection of clothing with Uniqlo, or publishing my graphic memoir about my year in Paris, my work is editorial. I want to chronicle it all—the ups, the downs, love found, and love lost—in the only way I know how: with lettering, poems, and imagery that tells a story.

A friend recently said to me, “Don’t seek where you want to be, seek the truth of where you are.” This show is an extension of where I’ve been, where I am, and of all the summers I’ve spent falling in love over and over again.
